Be the answer AI gives

Your next customer may not search at all — they may ask ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Google’s AI who to hire. GEO is the work of making sure the answer includes you.

Search is splitting in two. Alongside classic Google, a fast-growing share of customers now ask AI tools directly — "who's the best electrician near me for old houses" — and receive an answer, not a list. If your business isn't in that answer, there's nothing to scroll to. You simply don't exist for that customer.

GEO — Generative Engine Optimization — is the discipline of making your business easy for AI systems to understand, trust, and recommend. It's early, it's real, and almost none of your competitors are doing it. That's precisely the opportunity.

What makes a business recommendable to AI

  • Machine-readable clarity. Your services and service areas stated plainly, in clean structured text — not implied through photos and vibes an AI can't parse.
  • Structured data (Schema). Markup that spells out your business — what you do, where, hours, reviews — in the language machines read natively. We build this into every page.
  • Answer-shaped content. Pages that directly answer the real questions customers ask, because those answers are what AI responses get assembled from.
  • Consistency and reputation. Matching information everywhere plus genuine reviews — the trust signals that make an AI comfortable putting your name in its answer.
  • AI-crawler access and monitoring. Making sure the AI systems can actually read your site, then tracking how you show up in their answers and improving it.

What this looks like when it works

Here is the evidence from a site I own and run. Between 23 May and 22 August 2026, Caliber Contracting recorded 35,399 impressions inside Google’s AI features — the AI Overviews and AI Mode answers that now sit above ordinary results. Over those 92 days it roughly doubled, from around 230 impressions a day to 505.

That works out to roughly 17.5% of the site’s entire search visibility now arriving through AI answers rather than the blue links beneath them. 96.5% of it came from Canada, which is what a real local audience looks like rather than automated traffic.

Two things worth being precise about, because most people selling this aren’t. These are impressions, not citations and not clicks — Google’s report has no click column for AI features, so nobody can honestly tell you what traffic they produced. And this is a different measurement from visitors arriving from ChatGPT and similar assistants, which shows up in Analytics instead and averages 2 minutes 1 second of engagement on the same site. Both are real. Combining them into one big number would not be.

The other useful finding: the pages AI surfaces are not the same pages Google ranks. The most-surfaced page on that site is a guide to aging in place — 5,877 impressions, nearly 60% ahead of anything else, and not a top organic performer. Regulatory explainers, cost guides and life-stage decisions are what AI answers pull from. That shapes what is worth writing.

Honesty clause: nobody can guarantee placement in AI answers — and anyone who promises it is selling the old overconfidence in a new wrapper.

What we promise instead is the truthful version: we build the technical and content foundations that make you as citable and recommendable as possible, we monitor how you appear, and we keep improving it as this landscape develops. The foundations overlap heavily with excellent SEO — so the work compounds either way, and the businesses building it now will be very hard to catch later.

Common questions

Is AI search actually big enough to matter yet?

It's growing fast and it's already influencing buying decisions — and Google now puts AI answers at the top of ordinary searches, so you're being summarized by AI whether you planned for it or not. The strategic point is timing: the foundations take months to build and compound, and right now almost no local business is building them.

How is GEO different from SEO?

SEO earns you a place in a ranked list; GEO earns you a place in a composed answer. The foundations overlap heavily — clarity, structure, credibility, useful content — which means GEO work strengthens your Google presence too. It's not a replacement for SEO; it's the same fundamentals extended to a new kind of reader.
